Norman Pritchard who became the first athlete to qualify in Olympics from India. Norman won two silvers at the Paris Olympic games in athletics and made India the first Asian country to win an Olympic Medal. After that came the golden era of Indian Hockey from 1928 Amsterdam to 1964 Tokyo, when India won 7 Olympic golds one after another, while last gold was won in 1980 in Moscow.

2016 might bring a new era of Indian success in Olympic games. India is going to send largest ever delegation of athletes in the history of summer Olympics. As 120 athletes have already qualified for the games in 15 different sports.

How to find cube root of non-perfect cubes in 10 seconds https://www.cgscoaching.com/bankpo-coaching-delhi/how-to-find-cube-root-of-non-perfect-cubes-in-10-seconds/ https://www.cgscoaching.com/bankpo-coaching-delhi/how-to-find-cube-root-of-non-perfect-cubes-in-10-seconds/#comments Wed, 13 Jul 2016 11:57:19 +0000 http://www.cgscoaching.com/bankpo-coaching-delhi/?p=118 As you know finding the cube root of non perfect is very difficult, claiming to find cube root of imperfect cubes in 10 seconds is almost impossible. However in this article I will give you two approximation methods to find cube root of an imperfect cube.

First method to find cube root of non – perfect cubes

This method is not as straight as finding cube root of perfect cubes so I will explain with an example, let’s take 150 as an example.
As we know 150 is a non perfect cube,

Step 1- Find the integral part

how to find cube root of non perfect cube

how to find cube root of non perfect cube

First we have to find out the integral cubes root between which 150 is. At this point you must be aware that 150 lies between 125 (cube of 5) and 216 (cube of 6). So integral part of cube root will be 5.

Step 2- Finding the decimal part of cube root

Divide 150 by square of 5 assume equal to x , i.e. 25. 150/25=6.  Now subtract x from integral part (5 in this case) AND DIVIDE BY 3.

6 – 5 = 1 and NOW divided by 3 =>1/3= 0.33.

step 3- Add this decimal number to to the integral cube root i.e. 0.3 + 5 = 5.3. Thus the cube root of 150 is 5.3.Now the actual cube root will be 5.314 but this is an approximation method and results will be always correct to only first decimal place.

Let us find cube root of a bigger non- perfect cube number,

for example 968,385

Make triplets of numbers, Ignore last 3 numbers, now check first 3 numbers.

968 is somewhere between cube of 9=729 and cube of 10 =1000, So integral part of cube is 9.

Now divide 968/81=11.9, because 11.9 is greater than 9 so subtract it from 9.

11.9-9=2.9.

Now divide the number by 3, 2.9/3=0.9 (no need to go beyond first digit because method is not accurate beyond first digit and we can’t waste time)

now after adding with integral part 9+0.9=9.9.

So cube root of 968,385 will be close to 99. But from this method it seems that

However this method is certainly not very elegant to present and accuracy has limits . Please let me have your views.

Second method to find cube root of non – perfect cubes

Before I tell you the second method you have to look at the following table,

  1. First step is same. Find integral cubes root of which your number is.
  2. Now subtract the cube of integral part from the number and suppose this number is x.
  3. Divide in the number by (Addition index I) before subtracting (n-1)*Dl/100, that will be your first digit after decimal place. as easy as it gets :).
Number Cube Dl= Difference

from last cube

Difference

from next cube

Addition index Ia
1 1 1 7 (1+7)/2*10= 0.4
2 8 7 19 (19+7)/2*10= 1.3
3 27 19 37 (19+37)/2*10= 2.8
4 64 37 61 (61+37)/2*10= 4.9
5 125 61 91 (61+91)/2*10= 7.6
6 216 91 127 (91+127)/2*10= 10.8
7 343 127 169 (127+169)/2*10= 14.8
8 512 169 217 (169+217)/2*10~ 19.5
9 729 217 271 (217+271)/2*10 ~ 24.5

For example

If you want to find cube root of 150,

Step 1- Find the integral part

First we have to find out the integral cubes root between which 150 is.  as you know 150 lies between cube of 5 and cube of 6. So integral part of cube root will be 5.

Step 2- Finding the decimal part of cube root

subtract 125 from 150-> 150-125=25.

step 3- now divide by addition index Ia=7.6 to guess value of n

n= 25/7.6~3, so subtract 25-2*0.49=24.02

Step 4-divide 24.02 by addition index

24.02/7.6= 3.16

so decimal part is0.316 which is lot more accurate. Hence cube root will be 5.316

Let us find cube root of a bigger non- perfect cube number,

for example 968,385

Step one will remain same,968 is somewhere between cube of 9=729 and cube of 10 =1000, So integral part of cube will be between 90 and 100.

Step 2- Finding the decimal part of cube root

subtract 968 from 729-> 968-729=239.

step 3- now divide by addition index Ia=7.6 to guess value of n

n= 239/24.5~9.8, so subtract 239-8.8*2= 221.4

Step 4- 221.4/24.5=8.9

so the cube root= 98.9

last digit 5, hence guessed cube root 98.95.

Actual cube root=98.93

As you can see this method works but it’s more time taking.

How to find Cube root of any number in 5 seconds https://www.cgscoaching.com/bankpo-coaching-delhi/find-cube-root-fast/ https://www.cgscoaching.com/bankpo-coaching-delhi/find-cube-root-fast/#comments Tue, 12 Jul 2016 11:35:52 +0000 http://www.cgscoaching.com/bankpo-coaching-delhi/?p=105 What is a perfect cube ?

A perfect cube number,  that you can write as a product of three equal factors of natural numbers.
perfect cube K=a*a*a=a³ ( a stand for integers.)

On the other hand a cube number can be found out by multiplying an integer by itself three times.

a*a*a=a³=K.

How to find out if a number is perfect cube or not ?

Before trying to jumping in for the formula to calculate cube root, we should need to know that formula can’t be used with every number but only with perfect cube of natural numbers. For example we can use this method with 5832 because it’s cube of 18, but we can’t use it with 1739 because it’s not a perfect cube.

Factorization method to find perfect cube

how to find cube root in 5 seconds

how to find cube root in 5 seconds

Now the classic method we learned in our school to find out if a number is a perfect cube or not is factorization. However  factorization is a cumbersome process and requires lot of time and effort. In a exam where you have to solve 100 questions in 60 minutes you can’t spend 30-90 seconds doing factorization. But some times in the case of prime number perfect cubes it is next to impossible to find the perfect cube. In order to save time we use digital sum method to determine if a number is perfect cube.

Digital sum method to verify if a number is perfect cube

Digital sum is nothing sum of all digits of a number, sum of digits of thus obtained numbers will be called digital root. note 9 and zero are considered the same numbers in digital soot. Before we begin, let us recall the cubes of first 10 natural numbers and obtain their digital sum. The following table shows digital sum and digital root of first 9 natural numbers-

Number Cube Digital Sum Digital root
1 1 1 1
2 8 8 8
3 27 9 9
4 64 6+4= 10 1+0=1
5 125 1+2+5= 8 8
6 216 2+1+6= 9 9
7 343 3+4+3= 10 1+0=1
8 512 5+1+2= 8 8
9 729 7+2+9= 18 9

As you can see that the digital root of a perfect cube is always 1, 8 or 9. So, we found our first condition

Check 1- all perfect cubes must have digital root equal to 1, 8 or 9 .

Moreover, the digital root of any number’s cube can be determined by the remainder the number gives when divided by 3:

Check 2:

  • If the cube has digital root 9, it’s cube root will be divisible by 3
  • If the cube has digital root 1, the cube root will have remainder of 1 when divided by 3.
  • If the cube has digital root 2, the cube root will have remainder of 2 when divided by 3.

With this understanding, if we have to check whether a given number is a perfect cube, just obtain the digital root of the given number. If the digital root is not 1, 8 or 9  we can be very sure that the number is not a perfect cube. However this necessary condition is not sufficient at all, if a number has a digital root of 1, 8 or 0, that does not mean, that the given number must be a perfect cube.

Determining the Cube Root Fast

Cube Root of numbers up to 6 digits

Step 1- Ignore the last three digits of the number and compare the remaining number to the cube of first 10 numbers, choose the perfect cube which is just lower (or equal) to remaining number. This is the first digit of your cube root.

Now for the last digit of the cube root check the last digit of the cube. For example, if the last digit of the number called out is 3, then the last digit of the cube root is 7.

Important rules for finding cube root fast –

  1. if last digit of the perfect cube is 0, 1,4,5,6 or 9 the last digit of cube root will also be same.
  2. If last digit of perfect cube is 7 last digit of cube root will be 3, if last digit is 3 cube root will be 7.
  3. If last digit of perfect cube is 8 last digit of cube root will be 2 and vice-versa.

Please see the examples in following table

Perfect cube Remaining number after

Ignoring last 3 digits

Lower Cube First Digit of

cube root

Last Digit Cube Root
2,744 2 1 1 4 14
91,125 91 64 4 5 45
753,571 753 729 9 1 91
389017 389 343 7 3 73

We can use the same logic by using nested intervals and find the cube of larger numbers. Make group of 3 digits and apply similar logic-

Finding cube root of a 9 digit number

  x =5,177,7171/3
take the first digit- The number x must be between 100 and 200 (100³=1,000,000 and 200³=8,000,000).
now take 5177, as we know cube root of 17 is 4913 and 18 is 5832 so x will be somewhere between 170-180. And 7 is on the ones place. so x will have 3 at unit digit.

Hence 173 comes into consideration. x =173.

Cube root of an eleven digit number

x =(23,295,638,016)1/3
take the first digit- The number x must be between 2000 and 3000 (2000³=8,000,000,000 and 3000³=27,000,000,000).
now take 23,295 as we know cube root of 23,295 will be around 28.5, as 28³=21962 and 29³=24969 (you don’t need to calculate it, once you start practicing our guessing method you will find it very easy)

And 6 is on the ones place. so x will have 6 at unit digit.

Hence x =(23,295,638,016)1/3

I hope this article will help you in finding the cube roots in 5 to 10 seconds. You may ask the question in comment section if you were not able to understand any part of the article.
